The share of private networks that use 5G is estimated to be 25% and it is growing very fast in all new deployments.
Industrial sector account for the lion-share of 5G deployments today. Manufacturing encompasses 49% of all Private networks, followed by transport and logistics with 17% and mining, oil and gas with a 7% of market share.
Nevertheless, new sectors beyond Manufactuing and transport are emerging. Some examples provide a promising outlook:
1. Entertainment venues: Verizon announced a deal with the NFL to deploy private networks in all 30 NFL team stadiums to enable real-time coach-to-coach communications. It also piloting cases at Hard Rock Stadium to support the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.
2. Broadcast networks: Broadcaster are using ‘temporary’ standalone private 5G networks to support video streaming of live events as a neutral host provider.
3. Healthcare: Private 5G is being piloted in several hospitals including Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Apollo Hospitals in India and Mokdong Hospital in Korea. Private 5G in hospitals is being tested for a host of applications including computer vision, robotic-assisted surgery and remote examinations.
It is important to notice that 5G private networks is still a nascent technology. Almost 40% of all 5G private networks announcements are still in a “proof of concept” mode. In contrast, over 80% of private LTE networks are operational and less than 10% are pilots.
