Firewall – a firewall also known as a “network firewall” is a security software or hardware appliance that can monitor, analyze, filter or control IP packets entering (ingress) or exiting (egress) a network. It establishes a kind of perimeter fence between a trusted/internal network and untrusted/external networks. Therefore, a firewall is capable of preventing and restricting unauthorized access to resources inside a private network. A firewall enforces actions or decisions to “accept/pass”, “reject/drop”, or just “log/report” depending on the rules/policies set by a network administrator.
