DevOps is a methodology in the software development and IT industry that integrates and automates the work of software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) as a means for improving and shortening the systems development life cycle. DevOps is also a culture, fostering collaboration among all roles involved in the development and maintenance of software. DevOps is complementary to agile software development, which is another development methodology designed to maintain productivity and drive releases with the common reality of changing needs. DevOps and agile are not mutually exclusive and are often practiced together.
