RIC – RAN Intelligent Controller
(RIC) is a software-defined component of the Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) architecture that’s responsible for controlling and optimizing RAN functions. RIC helps in creating an open ecosystem for developing, deploying, and operating third party applications (xApps for Near-RT RIC and rApps for Non-RT RIC) that would enable TCO optimization and enable revenue generation.
As the RAN sector continues to develop, an environment that is open, virtualized, and disaggregated is becoming more prevalent. RIC which is at the center of open RAN is gaining momentum. Through improved network efficiency, resource assurance, and control, RIC gives Telcos the chance to boost RAN efficiency and enable new use cases. Telcos will be able to reduce costs, enhance QoS, and create new revenue streams.
