What are the SYNC 0, SYNC 1 and IEEE 1588 Ports on Cisco ASR 9906 Router used for?
The SYNC 0 and SYNC 1 ports seen on the Route Switch Processor (RSP) boards of the Cisco ASR 9K Series are timing ports that can be configured as Building Integrated Timing System (BITS) ports.
The IEEE 1588 port is the PTP (Precision Time Protocol) port used to distribute time around the network. It comes with the support of 10G/1G optical port.
The RSP boards are in two categories:
- Service Edge Optimized e.g A9K-RSP5-X-SE
- Packet Transport Optimized e.g. A9K-RSP5-X-TR
The board also has Management ports and Console/AUX ports on RJ45 and LEDs for critical and normal operational alarms or states. The GPS port provides support for connection to GPS antenna which can synchronize with any of the satellite to provide system timing to the devices.
